The Consulate General of India in Johannesburg hosted a reception on the occasion of Republic Day, on the 26 January 2016 at his residence.
The Chief Guest for the evening was Hon. MEC [Minister) for Health, Ms. Qedani Dorothy Mahlangu. The MEC [Minister] for Road and Transport of Gauteng Province, Mr. Ismail Vadi also graced the occasion.
Prominent members of the South African Indian community including Dr. Essop Pahad [recipient of Pravasi Bhartiya Samman in 2015], Ambassador Mosie Moolla, Ms. Shantie Naidoo [ struggle hero] and members of the Indian community attended the function.
Thw Consul General of India, Mr. Randhir Jaiswal welcomed guests and enlightened us on the significance of Republic Day. He highlighted the Government of India’s priorities in engaging with the world and the diaspora in particular.
The High Commissioner of India, H.E. Ms Ruchi Ghanashyam in her welcome address reflected upon the warm and special India-South Africa ties.
The event was attended by over 350 guests and I had the pleasure of meeting a few dignitaries from various countries. We enjoyed the evening in the company of beautiful music, cultural dances and a traditional Indian dinner.
